IELTS - International English Language Testing System

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS®) is a test of English that will appraise the student' proficiency in the four prominent areas of English language - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. A band score of 1 to 9 is given for each individual section.

This is a primary requirement for studying in England, Australia, Canada and even the United State in Undergrad courses. IELTS is accepted by most British, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand academic institutions. In the United States, it is increasingly gaining recognition as an alternative to TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

IELTS Test Preparation Courses are of two types: the Academic Training and The General Training. The Academic is for the candidates who wish to pursue their higher education overseas whereas the General is for immigration and training requirements abroad.

At Meridien

The IELTS classes are held form 7:00 am 6: 00 pm Monday to Friday. The classrooms are spacious and fully equipped with up-to-date IELTS teaching materials. The timings of the classes will be of ten hours a week. The teacher will provide one hour theory class and the students will have one hour practical class in the library or in the self access lab.

Sunday Test
Every Sunday full listening, reading and writing tests are held for a two and half hour duration. Specific band scores are provided in each category of examination. In the test, each student is provided with individual headphones along with his/her personal volume control. The Sunday tests are like the real tests and the results are displayed on the notice board.

The Test is divided into 4 sections carrying equal scores overall.

It begins with Listening which is subdivided into four sections with time duration of 30 minutes. The intensity increases as the test progresses. You get ten minutes extra at the end of the test to transfer the answers on the actual original test paper.

Then comes the Reading which has three sections – time is 1 hour. We recommend students to devote 15 – 20 - 25 minutes for each section respectively as the intensity increases here as well.

You get a short break then – before starting your next section – Writing.

Writing also has two categories Tasks – I & II.
Task I displays a graph usually – line and bar both. Also pie chart is thrown in sometimes along with tables and process. The student’s job is to simply interpret the diagrams into writing in not less than 150 words without any personal opinion. Task II is like a typical essay that you write in class 9 and 10 in school. The essay could either argumentative or discussion. The only difference here is that you have to write both sides or argument – less on the one you disagree and vice versa. At any rate, it should not be written in less than 250 words.

The time allocated for the Tasks is 60 minutes and it is recommended that you spend around 20 minutes on Task I. But you can begin with any Task.

Speaking test is similar to those of the real test modules. The speaking module will be of 11 to 14 minutes and consists of an oral interview between the candidate and the examiner. The speaking interviews are recorded on tape for students' revision. Test consists of 3 parts. The first part is the general questions about your hobbies or families. The second part is unusual in a sense that you are given a cue card with simple questions on it and you are given one minute to jot down the main points which you later have to explain for about 3 minutes without any interruption. The 3rd section is the follow up of the 2nd – which could be debatable or two way conversation in other words.

Méridien offers the best contemporary method to the students. The Lab facilities are always open for the students powered by unlimited surfing of internet.
